Hiking the Kaaterskill Falls

Last Saturday we got up early and drove to the Catskill Mountains. First we thought we'd hike to Hunter Mountain.

How do you like this? A tree without a base or roots? Can it be?

Here's Roger's explanation:

About halfway up we reevaluated our plan and hiked back down so we could see Kaaterskill Falls, which was close by.

They were beautiful! It was actually a series of waterfalls, which we were able to look at, listen to, and walk next to for quite a while.

Even when we weren't at one of the cascades, the scenery was beautiful! Along the way we visited with people from Russia, Korea, New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Long Island. We had a great time!

We didn't do much stopping even though it was our first hike of the season and our knees were complaining. It was so tempting to take off our hiking boots and cool off our feet.

Well, we weren't always by the side of the water, and it wasn't always an easy trail. This is one of many rocky and/or rooty parts of the trail. One time we actually scaled a mountainside, thinking we were going from the blue trail to the yellow, only to find out at the top that we were WRONG! Luckily we met other adventurous hikers who helped us locate another trail.

When we got to the top, we walked along the escarpment trail for a while, where a hotel and large mansion used to be. How anyone ever got to it is beyond me!

All in all, we had a great time, and were grateful that Dad's surgeries have had enough time to heal so that we can do some of the activities we enjoy. Wish you were here to enjoy it with us!
